  15. York Times; from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound; in
  16. Paris. After starting his career as a stringer in India for
  17. TIME, Markham joined the Associated Press in 1967 and reported
  18. from Burma, Afghanistan and West Africa. He covered the fall of
  19. Saigon, the Iranian revolution and Israel's invasion of Lebanon
  20. for the Times, and was due to become the paper's deputy foreign
  21. editor in September.
